June Chebet Kili, a Kenyan student pursuing her studies in Australia, died on June 1, just weeks before she was due to graduate from university.

Where did June Chebet die?

The young woman breathed her last while receiving treatment at Calvary Mater Hospital in New South Wales.

Her death has sent shockwaves through her family, friends and the wider Kenyan community both at home and abroad.

June, who hailed from Eldoret, was a student at the University of Newcastle and was eagerly looking forward to a milestone she had worked hard to achieve.

The beloved daughter of prominent Eldoret farmer George Kili and his wife, Brenda, was scheduled to graduate on June 26, less than a month after her untimely passing.

June mourned brother’s death

What makes her death even more heartbreaking is the painful history her family carries. In 2024, the Kili family buried their son, Rodney, who died in a tragic farm accident in Kenya.

At the time of Rodney’s death, June penned an emotional tribute that revealed the deep bond she shared with her elder brother.

She described him as her best friend, biggest supporter and voice of reason, recalling how he guided her through life’s challenges and helped her adjust after moving abroad.

In the touching message, she wrote about calling him whenever she had good news to share, sought encouragement or needed advice.

June eulogised late brother

She credited Rodney with helping her navigate life in a foreign country and supporting her through difficult moments.

“You always told me how proud you are of me,” she wrote, adding that his reassurance made life’s struggles easier to bear.

June also spoke warmly of Rodney’s protective nature, his dedication to work and fitness, and the positive impact he had on everyone around him.

She vowed to honour his memory by working harder and striving to make him proud.

At the time, she admitted she did not know how she would heal from losing her brother but promised to carry his love and memories with her throughout her life.

Kenyans mourn June’s death

Now, in a cruel twist of fate, the family that mourned Rodney is once again preparing to say goodbye to one of its own.

The news of June’s death has left friends, relatives, and members of the Kenyan diaspora in Australia devastated.

Many have been gathering daily for prayer meetings as they mourn the young woman whose future appeared bright and full of promise.

Messages of condolence have continued to pour in from across Kenya and Australia, with many expressing sympathy for a family that has now endured two profound losses in a remarkably short period.
