A concerned parent has taken to social media to seek advice regarding her troubled relationship with her adult daughter.

The mother said her relationship with her daughter had been strained for some time, leaving her frustrated and unsure of how to handle the situation.

“Hi therapist parents, I need help before I go mad. This is about my daughter who previously refused to do a caregiving or nursing course and instead opted for IT. A few weeks ago, she went silent and later complained about network issues and poor housing conditions. As a good parent, I installed Wi-Fi and rented a one-bedroom house with an indoor toilet and bathroom for her. To my surprise, she still went silent on me. She does not pick up my calls, and remember, I am abroad,” she wrote.

Why does Kenyan lady avoid talking to her mum?

After confronting her daughter, the young woman sent her a blunt WhatsApp message that left the mother shocked and helpless.

The mother shared the message online, exposing the daughter’s tone and attitude, which also surprised many social media users.

“That’s why I am avoiding talking to you because we will end up arguing and not discussing anything meaningful. In fact, not even casual conversations at this point. We are always arguing, and I cannot share anything with you because your understanding of me is only 0.5 percent,” the young woman wrote.

The mother admitted she was deeply frustrated and asked fellow parents for advice on how to deal with a situation that seemed to be slipping out of her control.

Jane Murimi Mugo, a counsellor and parent, advised parents to be keen on how they raise their children and the power they give them.

“Parenting in this era of Gen Zs and Gen Alphas is different from millennials going back. Today’s most common parenting model is the negotiating model, where parents will have a chat with theri kids before making decisions. Kids nowadays have freedom of expression. However, that should not mean that what they say should carry the day. Parents need to draw a balance lest they find themselves in such a position as this mum who seems to be hell-bent on making her daughter happy,” she told NgGossips.

Kenyans react to woman’s strained relationship with daughter

Many parents responded in the comment section, offering advice while also sharing their views on the matter.

HumbleChestnut1410:

“Eish, mama, renting her a one-bedroom house was the worst mistake. Let her choose her own course, and if she doesn’t want to study, let her look for a job. One thing about me is I don’t force children. Choose whatever you want to do and I will support you. If not, go out and hustle. Abroad stress plus ungrateful young adults will give you high blood pressure.”

Sidi Taaka:

“Maybe give her a sabbatical until she is ready and knows what she wants. But tell her she has to find a job and pay some of her bills. Sometimes children can be out of touch with reality. Earning her own money will teach her a lot. Even the Wi-Fi, stop paying for it so she can learn that it is a privilege. Her pride will come down.”

Maureen Monyoncho:

“Mama, you’re struggling to make her comfortable, yet she is still giving you sleepless nights by refusing to talk to you. Withdraw that support so she can come back to her senses. You have pampered her too much. Now she thinks she is the parent. Block her and see if she will continue with the silent treatment.”

Anonymous Member 831:

“Hugs, dear. We always say the frontal lobe is still developing. Don’t stress too much. But how has the parenting journey been? It sounds like there may have been conflict for a long time.”

Charlotte Musimbi:

“Some of us are responding harshly because we have never lived with toxic or controlling parents. I once realised I was a toxic mother to my firstborn daughter. I noticed I was pushing her away, and I had to change.”
