Students at the national school were temporarily sent home after the administration detected growing tension among a section of learners.

The students allegedly attempted to stage a strike, but the situation was contained before it could escalate.

In a communication to parents dated June 4, Mang’u Principal Bernard King’ah said the Board of Management (BOM), Parents Association (PA) and school administration had resolved to release all students as a precautionary measure.

What did Mang’u students do after foiled unrest?

In a video that has left many social media users disappointed, one student was seen recording as he narrated the events unfolding at the school.

Several students had gathered in the school compound in the dark, chatting in small groups after the alleged failed strike attempt.

However, some appeared excited by the prospect of being sent home.

“We are on strike. Tomorrow, expect us home. We are going home!” one of the students shouted as another echoed his sentiments amid laughter.

The clip prompted many people in the comments section to question why a student had a mobile phone in school, while others sympathised with parents who would be inconvenienced by the unexpected closure.

“Furahia kabisa. When you become a parent, you’ll understand how painful it is to pay school fees only for your child to come back home because of a strike. My son came home, stayed for two weeks and then went back. Now they are home again for the same reason. It hurts a lot.”

Bukosi

“Wacha wafurahie kabisa, not knowing how hard parents work day and night just to secure their future. The frustration I feel, I can’t even explain it.”

“They even have phones in school. I wish you knew that even raising fare to get you home is an uphill task for some of us parents.”

Shakky 254

“This is so sad. You are happy about going home. Nowadays, home feels like heaven to you, but remember your parents. Some of them pray for you every day just to keep you in school and help shape your future. Very unfortunate.”
