Activist and former presidential candidate, Aisha Yesufu, has strongly criticized a reported Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of several opposition political parties, describing the move as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.

In a statement on Tuesday, Yesufu said the alleged deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, and Zenith Labour Party amounted to an attempt to weaken opposition politics and pave the way for a one-party state.

The outspoken activist argued that the action undermines democratic principles and the rights of Nigerians to political choice, insisting that democracy thrives on competition of ideas and a vibrant opposition.

Yesufu, who has been involved in several pro-democracy campaigns, including the #BringBackOurGirls movement, said Nigerians must resist any effort that could erode democratic freedoms and political pluralism.

She further criticized the judiciary, alleging that it was being used as a tool for political suppression rather than the protection of justice and constitutional rights.

Calling on citizens to remain vigilant, Yesufu urged Nigerians to defend democracy and demand that electoral and judicial institutions uphold the will of the people.

According to her, the issue goes beyond any individual political party and concerns the future of democratic governance in Nigeria. She maintained that democracy is a right earned through the sacrifices of many Nigerians and must be protected at all costs.
