Nigerian, Chinese players shine in ITF J30 Abuja

The ITF World Tennis Tour J30 Abuja continued to serve up thrilling action as players battled for supremacy in both the singles and doubles events at the National Tennis Centre.

Key Highlights:

The tournament witnessed a mixture of dominant victories on Thursday, dramatic tie-breaks and impressive comeback performances as the race for the titles intensified.

One of the headline results of the day saw Nigeria’s Gbolahan Oluwajuwon Olawale secure a notable victory over American player Elliott Awomoyi in a fiercely contested boys’ singles encounter.

Olawale showed resilience and composure throughout the match, defeating the American 6-2, 7-6 in a contest that featured long rallies and high-quality shot-making.

The Nigerian’s ability to hold his nerve in the tie-break proved decisive as he advanced to the next stage of the competition.

China’s Jinxuan Cheng continued his impressive campaign with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 victory over Nigeria’s Mueez Owolabi, while fellow Chinese player Hengzhi Cui delivered one of the most dominant performances of the day, dispatching India’s Jagruth Kasireddy 6-4, 6-0.

Nigeria’s Seyi Ebenezer Ogunsakin also booked his place in the next round after Onyekachi Michael Ogunjiofor retired from their match with Ogunsakin leading 3-1.

The girls’ singles event was dominated by strong performances from Nigerian players.

In an all-Nigerian clash, Emmanuella Kwange overcame Nenrot Suwa after a hard-fought contest, prevailing 7-5, 3-6, 7-6. The encounter was one of the most competitive matches of the day and showcased the growing quality of junior tennis in Nigeria.

Gloria Samuel continued her impressive run by defeating Canada’s Daisy Okechukwu 6-3, 6-2 to reach the next round.

Top Nigerian junior Success Ogunjobi cruised past compatriot Chimezurum Ogualu 6-2, 6-2, while Khadijat Eleojo Mohammed recorded a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Toluwalashe Agunbiade.

The doubles competition featured several exciting encounters and match tie-breaks.

Nigeria’s Daniel Onoja and Terungwa David Apev secured a hard-earned 6-4, 7-6(7) victory over fellow Nigerians Olorun-Damilola Agunbiade and Wisdom Effiong in one of the closest matches of the day.

The international pairing of Omoyinka Ayinla of Great Britain and Nigeria’s Chimezurum Ogualu defeated Salvation Alex and Destiny Tomizayi 6-4, 6-7(9), 10-5 in a thrilling contest that required a deciding super tie-break.

Another comeback victory was recorded by Emmanuella Bebe and Nenrot Suwa, who recovered from losing the opening set to defeat Mary Azi and Gloria Opeyemi Oladimaji 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Third-seeded Nigerian pair Elisha Ishaku Kwange and Gbolahan Oluwajuwon Olawale demonstrated great fighting spirit as they rallied from a set down to beat Israel Iyanuoluwa and Heman Aframai 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

China’s highly-rated partnership of Jinxuan Cheng and Hengzhi Cui produced arguably the most dominant performance of the tournament, overwhelming Nigeria’s Paul Idowu Adebisi and Olive Victor Divine 6-0, 6-0.

The Chinese pair displayed exceptional coordination and attacking tennis, not allowing their opponents a single game throughout the match.

Elsewhere, Elliott Awomoyi and Seyi Ebenezer Ogunsakin recorded a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 victory over Awal Jaji and Mueez Owolabi.

Nigeria’s Emmanuel Kwange and Success Ogunjobi also impressed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Omoyinka Ayinla and Chimezurum Ogualu.

Canada’s Daisy Okechukwu and Nigeria’s Gloria Samuel battled back from a set down to defeat Emmanuella Bebe and Nenrot Suwa 6-7(4), 6-2, 10-3 in a dramatic match.

The partnership of Toluwalashe Agunbiade and Lithuania’s Roneta Kacinskaite also advanced after defeating Nigerians Idowu Favour Godwin and Favour Okon James 6-4, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Khadijat Eleojo Mohammed and Sri Lanka’s V.D. Rashmi Omaya Wijewardana secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Sarah Nasiral Tijani and Ziyyadat Tenicia Wuraola.

The boys’ doubles semifinals produced two quality encounters.

Nigeria’s third-seeded team of Elisha Ishaku Kwange and Gbolahan Oluwajuwon Olawale defeated Elliott Awomoyi and Seyi Ebenezer Ogunsakin 6-4, 6-3 to secure a place in the final.

In the second semifinal, Chinese second seeds Jinxuan Cheng and Hengzhi Cui continued their dominant run, defeating Terungwa David Apev and Daniel Onoja 6-3, 6-2.

The results set up a highly anticipated final between the Nigerian pair of Kwange and Olawale and the Chinese combination of Cheng and Cui, guaranteeing an exciting climax to the tournament.

With Nigerian players strongly represented across several categories and international competitors pushing them every step of the way, the ITF J30 Abuja tournament continues to highlight the immense talent emerging from junior tennis both in Nigeria and around the world.
