The Ogun State Police Command has commenced investigation into two men allegedly found with a large amount of money by personnel of the Nigeria Forest Security Service in the Atiba area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The suspects were arrested on Thursday, June 4, 2026, during a security operation at Atiba in Odogbolu Local Government Area.

Videos and photographs circulated on social media showed the two men, described as Fulani herdsmen, allegedly in possession of large sums of cash.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspects were intercepted by operatives of the Nigeria Forest Security Service and later handed over to the police for further investigation.

Babaseyi said preliminary inquiries had begun to establish the identities of the suspects and determine the circumstances surrounding their presence and activities in the area.

“The Ogun State Police Command wishes to assure residents that the situation is under control and that there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

“The suspects will be subjected to a thorough and professional investigation in accordance with the law, while any further action will be guided by the outcome of ongoing inquiries.”

The police spokesperson assured residents that the command remained committed to public safety and security across the state.

He urged members of the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information.

Meanwhile, the command also debunked claims that a group of men earlier intercepted in a bus in Ifo Local Government Area were criminals.

The clarification followed tension in parts of Abeokuta after unverified reports circulated that a commercial bus loaded with suspected criminals had been sighted along the Ibogun Road axis.

Babaseyi said the command acted swiftly on intelligence received on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, and deployed surveillance and anti-robbery teams to the location.

According to him, police operatives discovered that the bus had already been intercepted by anxious local youths.

He said on-the-spot investigation revealed that the vehicle was conveying 21 manual labourers engaged by the construction firm handling the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Ifo-Ibogun federal road project.

“Following rigorous identity verification, the police confirmed that the men were law-abiding citizens legally contracted for the road infrastructure development,” he said.

The command dismissed rumours linking the workers to any criminal syndicate or kidnapping network as false and unfounded.

Babaseyi added that police officers reassured the workers of their safety and escorted them to their designated work site to prevent further harassment or intimidation.

The command urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, while assuring the public that all credible security concerns would be investigated promptly.
