Yinka Alaseyori, popular gospel singer has apologised to Nigerians who were offended by her comments on the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo state, saying she never intended to downplay the pain of victims and their families.

In a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, the singer expressed regret over the backlash that followed her earlier remarks on the insecurity crisis, particularly the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo state.

Alaseyori said she became aware that many Nigerians felt her comments suggested that their concerns and frustrations over the worsening security situation were being ignored.

“I did a video two days ago about the kidnapped children, touching on government, parastatals and every agency. But when I woke up yesterday, I found out that some well-meaning Nigerians were not happy about it, as I made them feel their voices are unheard,” she said.

The gospel artiste appealed for understanding, stressing that she would never intentionally dismiss the suffering of parents, guardians and relatives of the abducted victims.

“You know me too well that I would never make you feel like that. Mothers, do not be offended. I am sorry. I beg in God’s name. Please, forgive me. I would never think like that. Pardon and forgive me,” she added.

Alaseyori had earlier urged Nigerians to continue praying over the country’s security challenges, maintaining that government authorities were making efforts to restore peace and secure the release of those in captivity.

Her comments, however, drew criticism from some Nigerians who argued that prayers alone were not enough and called for stronger action from government and security agencies to tackle the growing wave of kidnappings and attacks.

The abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State has continued to brew public outrage, with civil society groups, labour unions, religious bodies and other stakeholders demanding urgent measures to ensure the safe return of the victims and improve security across schools nationwide.
