  • Doctor John Muiruri confirmed his daughter’s death in a tragic school fire at the Utumishi Girls’ Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru county
  • Seven girls allegedly started the fire, leading to 16 fatalities, which included Nichole Michelle Muiruri and 79 injuries, with many still nursing them in the hospital
  • Parents, among them Muiruri, demanded accountability and improved safety measures in schools as they underwent DNA testing to identify the bodies of their daughters

Nakuru, Kenya: A devastated doctor, John Muiruri, has narrated how he received the news of his daughter’s death while still at work and had to travel all the way to Gilgil, Nakuru county, to confirm.

Nichole Michelle Muiruri was among the 126 girls who sadly perished in the inferno that claimed 16 lives and left 79 students of the Utumishi Girls’ Senior School badly injured.

It has emerged that the sad event was orchestrated by seven girls – people who were captured in a CCTV clip sprinkling fuel, then starting a fire in the dorm. Many girls lost their lives trying to escape the raging flames and suffocation in the dorm through the doorways and windows.

Utumishi Girls Tragedy: Viral parent seen looking for daughter finally speaks after daughter’s death

“My wife called me saying that our neighbours had told her the school was on fire and that our girl could not be found. I was at work, and as a parent I travelled from Nairobi to witness what was happening,” he said.

The DNA samples were supposed to be taken from Naivasha, and fortunately when he went to the schoolthe samples were taken, the samples were taken, and that is why we are waiting for the results. It has been a devastating two days; I saw the name of my daughter on the list. I’m not expecting any miracles,” he added.

Who does Muiruri want to be questioned?

When it comes to the investigation, I want them to re-evaluate everything and bring the people to book; let the law take its course. The parent also questioned how the principal’s plans work at school; the dormitory does not have any problems.

“I can decide to run the school, but we should have laws in place. We should have had a dorm master who would have known what was happening. Where was the teacher on duty? Many people need to be behind bars,” observed the parent.

Utumishi Girls tragedy: Kenyans stunned as girl linked to deadly fire that killed 16 goes missing

“The kids should comply with the system and share everything they know,”he added.

How did Kenyans react to the story?

Sal Korwa:

“One of the major causes of fire outbreaks in our boarding schools today is the generation we are raising. We are living in a challenging era where many young people are becoming increasingly hard-headed. Though certainly not all of them. Several factors may contribute to this problem, including lifestyle choices, peer influence, lack of moral and spiritual guidance, poor parenting and the many frustrations students go through but cannot openly discuss.”

Eunice Sheerow:

“Nashangaa ilifungwa from outside aje? Mlango kwani imetengenezwa aje?”

Ywaya Achieng Pamela:

“The man is very strong, some very painful words coming from his mouth without a tear. Poleni sana.”

Beatrice Kanyinge

“This parent, I salute; he has been the face of DNA for the rest of the little ones. I cant.. if I were him, ningekua ward. May Holy Spirit receive them and give these parents closure in Yeshua’s name.”

“Many schools like closing the door out side which is risky, they say some girls like going to boys, But the best is to have many matrons so that in each hostel a matron should sleep near the door and close inside.”

Carolyne Mwende:

“God of all creation have a special encounter upon this parent.”

DCI arrest 7th girl from Utumishi Girls

Previously, the DCI arrested a girl linked to the deadly Utumishi Girls’ Senior School fire, who had gone missing after allegedly participating in the heinous crime.

According to earlier reports, there was inadequate oversight and circumstances that contributed to the tragic incident that broke many hearts in the country.

In the aftermath of the crime, public reaction reflected a very complicated discourse on parental responsibility as well as school management accountability.
