President Bola Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, sportsmanship, and peaceful conduct as the party begins its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Thursday, Tinubu described the commencement of the APC primaries as a “historic moment” for the ruling party as it prepares for its fourth election cycle since formation.

The President said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and sacrifice, urging members to preserve those ideals during the primaries. According to him, the exercise is not only meant to produce party candidates but also serves as a test of the party’s unity, resilience, and strength.

Tinubu commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, noting that such moves would reduce tension and strengthen internal cohesion. However, he stressed that where consensus fails, party members should conduct themselves peacefully and democratically.

“There will always be winners and losers in every contest,” Tinubu stated, urging victorious aspirants not to gloat while advising unsuccessful contenders to accept outcomes in good faith and prepare for future opportunities.

The President also appealed to party leaders, governors, and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants throughout the exercise.

He further called for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s political process, describing both groups as critical demographics that must not be sidelined.

Tinubu also directed security agencies, especially the Police, to remain professional and avoid interference during the primaries, insisting their role should be limited to maintaining peace and order.

The APC primaries are scheduled to begin with House of Representatives contests and will culminate in the presidential primary on May 25, 2026.

In conclusion, the President wished all aspirants success and expressed optimism that the party would emerge stronger and united ahead of the general elections.
