Tension gripped Umuadara community in Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday after a female nursing student, Wendy Achumba, was found beheaded in her apartment.
Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, was originally from Ngwa in Abia State. According to residents, she had completed her Midwifery programme and was undertaking her Post Basic studies at the time of her death.
The victim was reportedly found dead in her residence in Umuadara, with her body bearing signs of brutal violence. Blood stains were said to be all over the apartment when residents discovered the scene.
Residents who made the discovery raised the alarm, which quickly drew youths and other members of the community to the location. Witnesses described the incident as shocking and disturbing, noting that Achumba was known to be calm and focused on her studies.
“She was a calm person and focused on her studies. Nobody expected something like this to happen,” a resident who pleaded anonymity said.
News of the gruesome killing sparked anger among youths in the area. Tension rose when security operatives arrived at the scene, with residents confronting police officers and demanding an immediate investigation and justice for the deceased.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear as of the time of this report. It is also not known if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of students living off-campus in parts of Imo State, where cases of violent crime have been reported in recent years. Students and residents are now calling on the Imo State Police Command and the state government to ensure a thorough investigation and to improve security around student accommodations.
