According to a report by Punch on Sunday, May 17, 2026, National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has stated that he would work to ensure that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not re-elected in the 2027 general election.

He made the statement during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, where he addressed questions surrounding his political position and his previous involvement in the current administration.

Baba-Ahmed, who previously served as Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, used the interview to clarify his current stance on national politics.

Baba-Ahmed explained that his earlier role was within the administration but not in direct personal service to the President.

He stated that his engagement was part of official duties within government structure rather than a personal political relationship.

This clarification came after suggestions that his past appointment indicated continued alignment with the President’s political interests.

He emphasised that his participation in government was strictly institutional and should not be interpreted as political loyalty.

During the interview, Baba-Ahmed responded to questions regarding the possibility of working with President Tinubu again in the future.

He ruled out such an option, stating that his current political position and views on governance do not align with the direction of the present administration.

According to him, his decision is based on differences in political ideology and concerns about governance practices.

He maintained that his focus is now on political engagement through the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party.

He also made comments criticising aspects of Nigeria’s political structure, particularly the internal processes of major political parties.

Baba-Ahmed expressed concern about how candidates are selected and how political decisions are made within party systems.

He suggested that the process often limits broader participation by citizens and concentrates decision-making in the hands of a small group of political actors.

According to him, this structure affects the quality of democratic representation and reduces public influence in leadership selection.

Baba-Ahmed further stated that the current political arrangement has contributed to broader socio-economic challenges in the country.

He linked governance practices to issues such as rising poverty levels and economic hardship experienced by citizens.

He argued that political decisions made within party structures directly influence national outcomes, particularly in areas such as economic management, social welfare and governance efficiency.

His remarks focused on the need for reforms that would allow greater inclusion in political processes.

The PRP chairman also criticised what he described as the dominance of a few individuals in determining political outcomes.
