President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reportedly distributed 20 trucks of rice to each of the 36 states of the federation as part of efforts to ease the growing economic hardship facing Nigerians.
The disclosure was made by presidential aide Abdullahi Yakasai, who stated that the intervention was aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens struggling with the rising cost of food and living expenses across the country.
According to reports, the rice distribution forms part of the Federal Government’s broader palliative measures introduced following the removal of fuel subsidy and the current economic reforms which have led to increased inflation and food prices nationwide.
Yakasai explained that the initiative was designed to provide immediate relief to families and low-income households affected by the harsh economic situation. The rice consignments were reportedly sent to state governments for onward distribution to residents.
The Federal Government has in recent months rolled out several intervention programmes, including food distribution, cash transfers, and agricultural support schemes, in a bid to reduce the pressure on Nigerians amid the economic challenges.
However, the development has continued to generate mixed reactions from citizens and stakeholders. While some Nigerians commended the government for providing food support, others argued that temporary palliatives alone may not solve the deeper economic problems confronting the country.
Many citizens have continued to call for long-term solutions capable of addressing inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and the high cost of basic commodities.
Economic analysts have also stressed the need for sustainable policies that would improve food production, stabilize prices, and strengthen the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
The Tinubu administration has repeatedly assured Nigerians that ongoing economic reforms are necessary to rebuild the economy and that the hardship being experienced is temporary.
