Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned Nigerians against placing their hopes in emerging political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are not the solution to the country’s political challenges.

Key points:

  • Nyesom Wike said the ADC and NDC are not the solution to Nigeria’s political problems ahead of 2027.
  • He accused both parties of lacking transparency and internal democracy.
  • Wike criticised the parties for controversies surrounding their primaries and congresses.
  • He alleged that some ADC presidential aspirants rejected the party’s primary process.
  • The minister said political parties must prove credibility before asking Nigerians for support.

Wike said both parties had failed to demonstrate the transparency and internal democracy they claim to represent, describing attempts to portray themselves as alternatives to the major political parties as deceptive.

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja on Monday, the former Rivers State governor accused the parties of misleading Nigerians while struggling to manage their own internal electoral processes.

According to him, recent developments within the ADC and NDC exposed the weaknesses of the parties, particularly their inability to conduct primary elections and congresses without controversy.

“NDC, as small as they are, can’t conduct a primary without protest. Look at ADC, which says its coalition is willing to take over the structure of democracy. What has happened?” Wike said.

“During its primary election, two presidential aspirants came out to say they could not accept the process.

“We have been accusing one party or another of lacking transparency, but now look at what we have done ourselves. That tells you who is deceiving who.”

The minister argued that political groups seeking to position themselves as the nation’s redeemers must first demonstrate credibility and fairness within their own ranks before asking Nigerians for support.

“Who is coming to Nigerians to tell them they are the Messiah? Those people are lying. They cannot continue deceiving us,” he said.

“They have consistently said the Peoples Democratic Party is dead and that the All Progressives Congress is rotten, yet they cannot successfully organise an ordinary congress without controversy.”

Wike further alleged that the ADC’s internal process had generated significant dissatisfaction among its presidential hopefuls, claiming that two of the three aspirants openly rejected the outcome.

“They had three presidential aspirants and two of them said the process was rubbish. That is criminality at the highest level,” he added.

The minister’s remarks come amid growing political realignments and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with several opposition figures seeking alternative platforms to challenge the ruling APC.
