According to a report by Punch News, on Sunday, June 6, 2026, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, revealed that several influential figures within the political space, including governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, have contacted him following his resignation from the African Democratic Congress.
Speaking on the reactions that followed his departure, the former SGF stated that he had received numerous calls from political stakeholders across the country.
According to him, a number of political parties even indicated their readiness to hand over their platforms to him if he chose to join them.
He also disclosed that several prominent political figures reached out to congratulate him for the decision he took.
Lawal further explained that at least five serving APC governors, whom he described as personal friends, contacted him to inquire whether he was planning a return to the ruling party.
He added that some ministers also expressed interest in knowing whether he would reconsider joining the APC.
Lawal maintained that he is not presently interested in returning to the party.
He stressed that the circumstances that prompted his exit from the APC have not changed and that it would be unreasonable for him to return to the same environment without any meaningful reforms.
According to him, going back to the party without addressing the issues that led to his departure would amount to making no progress.
He insisted that there was little value in rejoining an organisation where the concerns that drove him away still exist.
The former SGF also clarified that he is not currently searching for another political platform.
He said he has stepped away from active political engagement for the time being and has returned to his village to focus on farming activities.
Lawal noted that politics was never a family tradition for him, stressing that he was not born into a political dynasty and therefore does not see politics as a lifelong obligation.
He remarked that he has distanced himself from many of the politicians with whom he once interacted, explaining that their relationships were largely built around political activities in Abuja.
Having stepped away from the political scene, he suggested that he no longer feels tied to those associations.
Lawal also dismissed criticisms directed at him by supporters of Atiku Abubakar and some members of the ADC who accused him of abandoning the party after benefiting from it.
He said he remains unconcerned by the backlash and does not consider the reactions significant enough to affect his decision.
Responding to claims that his resignation amounted to a betrayal of the former vice president, Lawal firmly rejected the allegation.
He argued that he and Atiku had never belonged to the same political camp and therefore there was no basis for such accusations.
He Said, “Forget what his boys are saying. Once I return to Abuja and start speaking again, they will panic and begin defending themselves as usual.”
Lawal added that he is currently enjoying a peaceful and comfortable period away from political battles.
However, he warned that if those criticising him continue to provoke him, he would be prepared to respond and engage them politically when the time comes.
