Collapsed Lagos Ramp Sparks Traffic Chaos and Safety Fears on Major Expressway Link

The collapse of a portion of an access ramp connecting the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway bridge has angered drivers.

During a visit to the location on Saturday, the drivers told reports that the development routinely causes traffic congestion and encourages drivers to slow down while navigating the area.

It was also discovered that the ramp’s damaged section had been neglected for a while.

The collapsed section is now immersed in floodwater as a result of recent rainfall, which is claimed to have made the situation worse.

The circumstances made it challenging for drivers to determine the extent of the damage, according to a driver who went by the name Suleiman.

The issue is that the hole becomes covered in water when it rains, making it impossible for cars to tell how deep it is.

As soon as you reach the location, you must completely slow down. Because everyone tries to avoid the nasty part, traffic gets heavier around rush hour.

Before it began to rain, this place was like this, and nothing was done about it. Thus, Suleiman remarked, “the rainfall has only made it worse.”

Our correspondent saw cars crawling as drivers cautiously maneuvered around the impacted area to prevent their cars from getting damaged.

Gilbert Adebayo, another driver, called the scenario hazardous and added that there was a security risk due to the damaged portion of the road.

“The road is becoming a trap for motorists,” he declared. It is more worse at night because it is harder to see and one is more likely to be robbed.

That might possibly be occurring right now; perhaps I haven’t been a victim and I don’t hope to become one.

Joseph Okonkwo, a ride-hailing driver, voiced concern that if the authorities do nothing, the damaged area may spread.

“We spend more time in traffic because vehicles are forced into a single path at that point,” he stated.

The injured area could grow and become more serious if nothing is done right away. The erosion may get worse due to the water’s constant flow around the impacted area.

Before things get worse, the drivers asked the Ministry of Works and other pertinent organizations to make the necessary repairs right away.

Adesina Odunuga, the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure spokeswoman, was unavailable for comment on Monday due to unanswered phone calls.

As of the time this complaint was submitted, he had not responded to a text message given to him.
