Nnamdi Kanu Death Penalty Move Could Affect Nigeria-UK Relations, Lawyer Warns

According to a report by The Nggossips on Monday, June 8, 2026, Lawyer to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has raised concerns over reports that the Federal Government may be seeking a harsher punishment against his client, warning that any attempt to pursue the death penalty could have diplomatic consequences for Nigeria.

Speaking on the matter, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, argued that the case extends beyond Nigeria’s domestic legal system because the IPOB leader holds both Nigerian and British citizenship.

According to Ejimakor, the reported cross-appeal by the Federal Government seeking a stiffer sentence could attract international attention, particularly from the United Kingdom, which has consistently opposed capital punishment and often intervenes diplomatically when its citizens face the death penalty abroad.

The lawyer explained that Britain has a longstanding policy against executions and frequently offers consular assistance to its nationals involved in capital punishment cases in foreign countries.

He noted that this position could bring additional scrutiny to any effort aimed at securing a death sentence against Kanu.

Ejimakor maintained that the matter should be handled carefully, stressing that decisions taken in the case could influence Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with countries that strongly oppose the death penalty.

He further stated that Kanu’s dual citizenship introduces an international dimension that may increase foreign interest in the ongoing legal proceedings.

The lawyer’s comments come amid reports that the Federal Government is considering legal options that could result in a more severe punishment for the separatist leader.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence imposed by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja after he was convicted on terrorism-related charges in November 2025.Please kindly click the Read Original Button at the top to read more of the original content of this article.
