The Labour Party (LP) has revised its timetable for selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, shifting all its primary elections to May 30, 2026.

The decision was announced in Abuja on Thursday by Ken Asogwa, the party’s National publicity secretary.

Under the original arrangement, governorship and state house of assembly primaries were to hold on May 27, while presidential and National Assembly primaries were fixed for May 29.

The party has now consolidated all the exercises into a single-day event.

According to Asogwa, the review became necessary due to the overlap with key national events, particularly the Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) celebrations and the Democracy Day anniversary on May 29.

He said, “In consideration of the spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration and the national importance of the 29th May anniversary, the Labour Party, as a people-oriented and responsive political party, deemed it appropriate to adjust its schedule to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions.”

The party also described the adjustment as part of its commitment to inclusiveness and sensitivity to national traditions, while acknowledging that the change may affect some aspirants and stakeholders.
