Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada is reportedly preparing to recommend Michael Carrick for the club’s permanent manager position during a meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe this week.

According to reports, Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are expected to formally back Carrick for the role after his successful spell as interim manager.

The recommendation will reportedly be presented to Ratcliffe, who currently oversees football operations at the club under the INEOS structure.

Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate after guiding Manchester United back into the UEFA Champions League during his interim period in charge.

Reports claimed the former midfielder secured 33 points from 15 matches during his time on the touchline.

Other managerial candidates, including Andoni Iraola and Unai Emery, were also reportedly considered during the club’s assessment process.

Carrick’s influence inside the dressing room has also attracted strong support from players and staff at Carrington.

Following Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool, midfielder Kobbie Mainoo publicly praised the interim manager.

Mainoo said: “We want to die for him on the pitch.”

The reports added that many within the club now expect the 44-year-old to remain in charge permanently.

Carrick, however, has remained calm amid the speculation surrounding the managerial position.

Speaking on the ongoing discussions, Carrick said: “Whether it’s discussed or not discussed, it hasn’t bothered me.

“It hasn’t changed how I go about it.

“I’ve been confident in the work that we’re doing and working with the players and leading the club, so it literally hasn’t had any effect on me at all.”

He added: “I think it’s pretty obvious it’s going to be a process, obviously from the outset in terms of finding someone to fill the position in the end.”
