The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that it successfully contained a suspected gas leak incident reported along the Agoro/Okunowa Road axis of Ijebu-Ode, assuring residents that the situation is now under control and poses no further danger.

The command, led by Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni, said the incident occurred on May 15 2026 and prompted a rapid emergency response involving tactical units and environmental experts.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babasayi on X on Friday, officers were first alerted during routine patrols after reports emerged of a suspected chemical emission affecting parts of the community.

“The incident was reported when operatives on patrol received information concerning a suspected chemical emission affecting students and residents around parts of Ijebu-Ode,” he said.

He explained that tactical teams from the Obalende Division were immediately deployed to the affected areas to secure the environment and prevent panic.

“Following the report, tactical and surveillance teams swiftly mobilised to the affected locations and activated emergency response measures to safeguard lives, coordinate evacuation procedures, and maintain public order,” Babasayi stated.

Several schools were affected, including Our Ladies Grammar School (Epe Garage), Anglican Girls Grammar School (Obalende), Titilayo Agbaje Comprehensive High School (Imosan), Ifesowapo Comprehensive High School (Imosan), St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School (Imosan), and Orphanage Primary School (Imosan).

Students and residents were evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, though authorities confirmed that no deaths were recorded.

“The affected victims were promptly evacuated to the General Hospital and other private medical facilities for immediate medical attention.

“We are pleased to confirm that no life was lost, and all affected persons are responding positively to treatment,” the statement added.

Preliminary findings from state environmental monitoring systems indicated elevated methane gas levels in the area, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact source of the emission.

“Preliminary environmental assessments revealed elevated methane gas concentrations within the monitoring coverage area. Relevant experts are currently conducting detailed investigations to determine the source and assess associated risks,” the command said.

Ojajuni ordered heightened security and continuous surveillance in the affected communities while technical agencies carry out further assessments.

He assured residents that there was no cause for alarm.

“The area remains calm and under close monitoring. Members of the public are advised to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and continue with their lawful activities,” he said.

As a precaution, residents were also advised to avoid open flames or ignition sources in areas where unusual gas odors are detected and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, or respiratory discomfort.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and pledged continued collaboration with the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies to prevent future incidents and protect lives and property.

GossipsNG Online had reported that for the second time in less than two months, another gas leak was reported in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Friday, affecting over 100 students and their teachers.
