The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said that joint counter-terrorism operations conducted by Nigerian forces and the United States Africa Command (US-AFRICOM) have resulted in the killing of over 200 terrorists in the north-east region.

Samaila Uba, the director of defence information, disclosed this on Tuesday during an X Space discussion organised jointly by the DHQ and US-AFRICOM to review ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Uba said the collaboration had significantly improved intelligence-led operations, leading to the destruction of terrorist enclaves, logistics networks and operational bases.

According to him, the partnership has also enhanced the capacity of Nigerian troops through specialised training, intelligence sharing, joint planning and military education.

“The partnership has also strengthened the operational readiness of Nigerian troops through specialised training programmes, intelligence-fusion initiatives, joint planning engagements, and professional military education,” Uba said.

He added that the joint efforts have continued to support military operations across the North-East and other affected regions.

“These efforts have supported ongoing military operations across the north-east and other territories, contributing to operational success,” he said.

Uba, however, noted that the fight against terrorism remains ongoing, stressing the need for continued cooperation and intelligence sharing among stakeholders.

“While significant progress has been made, we recognise that the fight against terrorism is an ongoing effort,” he saidcooperation.

He added that enhanced  and public support remain critical to sustaining gains in the counter-insurgency campaign.

US-AFRICOM officials also reaffirmed their commitment to the partnership, saying their engagement with Nigeria is based on mutual agreement and respect for sovereignty.

The partnership between both countries has included intelligence sharing, joint operations, training programmes and coordinated strikes against terrorist networks, particularly in the North-East.
