Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has dismissed claims by fellow aspirant Nwabueze Oli that he won the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial primary, describing the assertion as baseless and inconsistent with available records.

Speaking on the controversy surrounding the Anambra Central primary election, Umeh questioned the credibility of Oli’s claims, alleging that the aspirant could not provide accurate details of the votes he purportedly received.

According to Umeh, Oli claimed to have secured about 6,000 votes in a local government area where the total number of registered NDC members is less than 3,500.

“He claimed to have scored 6,000 votes in our local government, yet the registered number of NDC members there is less than 3,500. He has no idea what he is talking about, and the results are available,” Umeh stated.

The senator also addressed allegations by some aspirants that they were extorted during the party’s nomination process, dismissing the accusations as attempts to justify their failures.

Umeh said the entry of prominent political figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso into the NDC attracted a large number of new members and aspirants seeking elective positions within the party.

“Just because Obi and Kwankwaso entered the NDC, the party witnessed a surge of people who wanted to contest for one thing or another. Those claiming they were extorted were trying to cheat and had their fingers burnt,” he said.
